How to position your NOBI leather strapped captain's mirror

Notorious BadgerComment

Many clients ask how they should position their leather strapped mirror on their wall.  The best advice to determine optimal hanging length is to mock up the mirror on your wall before hanging it.  Using this easy "masking tape" technique, you can better visualize how the final mirror will look on your wall:

Use masking tape technique to approximate hanging height and position

Use masking tape technique to approximate hanging height and position

1. Cut out a circular piece of cardboard or newspaper that is the size of the mirror 24" or 32"

2. Tape the cardboard on the wall you plan to hang the mirror.

3. Using masking tape, tape the shape of the strap on the wall.  You can adjust the tape to your desired length and shape.  Keep in mind that you should leave some space above the peg (it won't look good if your hanging peg is too close to the ceiling).  You should also consider the shape of the "triangle" above the mirror. Play with the masking tape to figure out your desired proportions.

Play with strap positions to find your desired proportions.

* Other considerations:

- Do you have a console table or a bathroom vanity under the mirror? Make sure you mark the height of any furniture of fixtures that is under the mirror.

- How tall is your partner or spouse? Are you hanging the mirror so your partner, who might be much taller or shorter than you can both use the mirror? ie, make sure the height of the mirror doesn't cut your partner's head off.

4. Once you've decided your desired hanging shape on your wall. Measure the distance from the top of the peg to the bottom of the mirror. That is your "hanging height."  You can tell me your desired hanging height and your NOBI mirror can be made to your desired hanging height.  Simply send me a message when you check out with this distance.

Happy hanging!

Inspiration and History of Leather Strapped Mirror

home decorNotorious BadgerComment

Leather Strapped Mirror in luscious brown leather is inspired by the iconic design of Jacques Adnet of the 1920's.  The simple round shape combined with the hanging leather strap harkens back to the classic design of that era.  It combines a hint of equestrian charm with a bit of masculine modernity.  Combined with brass hardware and vintage sourced knobs, this will surely make a great statement piece in your entryway or any room of the house.

Art Deco ‎is an eclectic artistic and design style that began in Paris in the 1920s and flourished internationally throughout the 1930s, into the World War II era.

Jacques Adnet is a furniture designer best known for his Art Deco Modernist designs and an icon of French Modernism.  Known for his avant-garde designs, Adnet was one of the first to integrate metal and glass in the structure and decoration of furniture. His style is the epitome of luxury.

In 1950, Adnet formed a partnership with the French fashion house, Hermes, where he developed a collection of leather-covered furniture and interior accessories. Accordingly, he made a round leather mirror with brass hinges. Besides the remarkable leather and brass details, the mirror is also unique as the strap that holds the mirror is in direct proportion to the dimension of the mirror.

Jacques Adnet (1900 - 1984) was a French architect and Art Deco Modernist designer and an icon of luxurious French Modernism. After completing his studies at the Municipal School of Design in Auxerre and the Ecole des Arts Decoratifs, Adnet established the company, JJ Adnet with his twin brother Jean. In 1925, Adnet was recognized as one of the most promising young designers at both the Salon d'Automne and Les Expositions des Arts Decoratifs. As well as designing furniture and mirrors, Adnet designed apartments and offices for numerous clients, including the French President and Unesco.
